The Observer Ethical Award for travel went to READ Global –a company which has established 67 community libraries in Nepal. It is not a matter of just giving books. The communities have to submit a proposal, buy the land and put in 10% of the cost themselves. Alongside each library, a local business is seeded to sustain and support it. Then books and a building are brought in. During the 13 year civil war not one of these libraries was touched. How’s that for joined-up thinking! Congratulations to the founder Dr. Toni Neubauer.
Who we are:This is the website and blog for the Highgate Library Action Group, a support group for a branch library in the London Borough of Haringey. Read on to find out what we are doing in the library now, how we have joined other groups to fight the austerity cuts decimating libraries, and more about our history.
